Project Blue Book

Project Summary

Project Blue Book was the longest-running official United States Air Force investigation into unidentified flying objects. Over its seventeen-year existence it examined more than 12,000 reports, concluding that the vast majority could be explained while leaving hundreds officially unidentified.

Overview

Project Blue Book was established following Project Grudge to continue the Air Force's investigation of UFO reports. Headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the project received reports from military personnel, law enforcement, pilots, scientists, and civilians throughout the United States. Dr. J. Allen Hynek served as the project's scientific consultant and gradually shifted from skepticism to advocating serious scientific investigation of unexplained cases. Blue Book investigated many of the most famous UFO incidents in American history before being officially terminated in December 1969 following the recommendations of the Condon Report.
