The MoD investigation examined reports from police officers, military personnel, aviation personnel and civilians across Britain. Radar recordings covering relevant areas and times were reviewed. Initial correspondence raised the possibility that an unidentified object had operated within the UK Air Defence Region without being detected on radar. Subsequent analysis identified the re-entry of a Russian rocket stage as a likely explanation for a substantial portion of the sightings. The MoD ultimately concluded that most of the reports could be attributed to the re-entry, while some low-level reports remained more difficult to explain.
