During the night of March 30–31, 1993, a large wave of UFO reports occurred across Britain. Particularly notable reports came from RAF Cosford and nearby RAF Shawbury in the West Midlands. RAF Police personnel at Cosford reported two bright lights passing over the base at approximately 1,000 feet at great speed without engine noise, while a meteorological officer at RAF Shawbury later reported a large object apparently moving slowly at low altitude, emitting a low-frequency hum and projecting a narrow beam of light toward the ground. The UK Ministry of Defence investigated the reports. Much of the wider sighting wave was subsequently attributed to the re-entry of a Russian rocket stage, although the Shawbury observation remained more difficult to reconcile with that explanation.
The Cosford incident formed part of a wider wave of aerial sightings across the United Kingdom during the night of March 30 and the early hours of March 31, 1993. Reports were received from Devon and Cornwall, Wales, the Midlands and other parts of Britain, with some reports also originating in Ireland.
At approximately 1:15 a.m. on March 31, RAF Police personnel on patrol at RAF Cosford observed two bright circular lights crossing the airfield area toward the southeast. The released RAF Police report described the lights as travelling at great velocity at an altitude of approximately 1,000 feet. They were reported as creamy white, constant in size and apparently separated by a constant distance. The observers reported no engine noise despite calm conditions and stated that a faint red glow was visible at the rear as the lights disappeared toward the horizon.
A separate and more unusual observation occurred at RAF Shawbury at approximately 2:40 a.m. The witness was a meteorological officer with several years of experience observing the sky and military aviation activity. The witness, publicly identified in later research as Wayne Elliott, reported seeing lights approaching the airfield and then apparently moving slowly or becoming stationary. He described a large object, estimated from its apparent size to be somewhere between a C-130 Hercules and a Boeing 747. A narrow beam of light appeared to sweep across the countryside below the object. He also reported an unusual low-frequency humming sound.
The Ministry of Defence opened an investigation. Initial internal assessments regarded the reports as potentially significant because the reported object appeared not to have been detected by available radar systems. Nick Pope, then responsible for the MoD UFO desk, recommended further investigation after considering the possibility that an unidentified object had operated in the UK Air Defence Region without being detected.
Subsequent investigation identified the re-entry of a Russian rocket stage associated with the launch of the Cosmos 2238 satellite as a likely explanation for a substantial portion of the sightings. The National Archives states that the majority of the sightings were eventually attributed to this re-entry.
The rocket explanation, however, does not straightforwardly account for every report. Contemporary MoD correspondence specifically noted that the re-entry could explain some high-altitude sightings but did not explain the low-level reports, the reported humming sound, or the Shawbury meteorological officer's observation. Later research also identified a police helicopter as a possible explanation for the beam reported at Shawbury, and the witness subsequently expressed acceptance of that explanation.
The case therefore contains both substantial official documentation and a strong conventional explanation for much of the sighting wave. It nevertheless remains disputed because the individual reports do not all fit neatly into a single explanation and because the original MoD investigation itself initially regarded the unexplained reports as potentially significant.
The archive classifies the case as Disputed rather than High credibility because the most extraordinary aspects of the incident are not supported by radar or other independent sensor evidence, and a substantial portion of the overall event has a credible conventional explanation.
