On August 27, 1979, Marshall County Deputy Sheriff Val Johnson encountered a brilliant unidentified light while patrolling a rural highway near Stephen, Minnesota. Moments later, Johnson lost consciousness. When he awoke, his patrol vehicle had sustained unexplained damage, his wristwatch and dashboard clock had stopped for approximately fourteen minutes, and broken glass was scattered inside the vehicle. Despite an extensive investigation, authorities were unable to determine the cause of the incident.
Shortly before 2:00 a.m. on August 27, 1979, Deputy Sheriff Val Johnson was patrolling State Highway 220 near Stephen, Minnesota, when he observed an intense light ahead of his patrol vehicle. Initially believing the object might be an approaching aircraft, Johnson continued driving toward it. As the light rapidly increased in size and brightness, he reported that it appeared to move directly toward his vehicle.
Johnson later recalled hearing the sound of breaking glass before losing consciousness. When he regained awareness, his patrol car had come to rest partially on the shoulder of the highway. The windshield was shattered, one headlight was broken, the light bar was damaged, and the vehicle's antennae were bent. Johnson suffered minor injuries to his eyes and was treated for temporary vision impairment consistent with exposure to an intense light.
Investigators discovered another unusual detail: Johnson's wristwatch and the patrol car's dashboard clock had both stopped for approximately fourteen minutes. Mechanical examination of the vehicle failed to identify a conventional explanation for the pattern of damage. No evidence suggested a collision with another vehicle or an animal, and no debris consistent with an impact was recovered from the scene.
The Marshall County Sheriff's Office, the Minnesota Highway Patrol, and other investigators examined the incident extensively. While various explanations were proposed over the years—including collision with a crane or other bird, fatigue, and meteor activity—none fully accounted for all of the physical evidence or Johnson's account of the encounter.
