Photographic Evidence: On August 30, 1951, Texas Tech freshman Carl Hart Jr. captured five clear photographs of the lights in formation, which were published nationally and remain iconic images of the era.
Investigation: The U.S. Air Force, via Project Blue Book lead investigator Lt. Edward J. Ruppelt, investigated the case. Ruppelt initially concluded the lights were mountain plovers reflecting new vapor street lights, but later admitted in his 1956 book that the true explanation was shared with him in confidence and could not be disclosed, leaving the case officially unknown.
