GEPAN Technical Note No. 16 is the French scientific investigation into the physical traces reported following the January 8, 1981 UFO sighting at Trans-en-Provence. Conducted by GEPAN, the predecessor to CNES's modern GEIPAN, the investigation examined the ground impression and surrounding vegetation, collected soil and plant samples, reviewed environmental and meteorological information, and evaluated possible conventional explanations. Laboratory analyses identified several unusual physical and biological effects associated with the site. The report ultimately concluded that an unusual physical phenomenon had occurred but was unable to determine its nature or origin.
